Since growing my hair long I’ve come to grips with having to venture into the women’s hair care aisle to buy my hair ties.
What I haven’t come to grips with however, is how crappy most of those grocery store bought hair ties actually are. I find that most of them quickly stretch out and lose all of their elasticity, or simply break all together – rendering them completely useless.
After using and getting extremely annoyed with dozens of cheap, crappy hair ties, I figured there had to be better options out there somewhere. So in an effort to track down the best hair ties for men with long hair, I turned to the internet to help solve my problem.
My criteria for finding the best hair tie was simple:
- They had to be tough, strong, and durable
- They had to have good stretch and elasticity
- They had to maintain their elasticity (reasonably long)
- They had to actually hold my hair in place (grip)
- They had to be available in masculine color options
- They had to be metal free (no old school metal clasp)
After much trial and error, I settled on the following list of best hair ties for men. Enjoy.
The Lineup:
- The Longhairs – Hair Ties for Guys
- Terra Ties – Biodegradable Hair Ties for Men
- eBoot – Large Stretch Hair Ties
- Gimme – No Break Hair Ties
- Scunci – Everyday & Active
- Kitsch – Spiral Hair Ties
- Goody – SlideProof Hair Ties
- Burlybands Hair Ties
- Slip – Silk Scrunchies
- Kooshoo – Organic Hair Ties
Best Hair Ties for Men Reviewed
The Longhairs – Hair Ties For Guys
As the name suggests, Hair Ties for Guys are designed specifically for men like us. Constructed using only tough, durable materials, these manly hair ties are nothing like the crappy hair ties you normally find in your local grocery store. These things are double stitched, they don’t get stretched out, and they don’t break. And as absurd as it may sound, they are weight tested to hold up to 80 pounds! While I definitely don’t have 80 pounds worth of hair, I sure as hell enjoy the peace of mind.
What I like about The Longhairs – Hair Ties for Guys:
• Durability
I don’t know about you, but I’ve enough of hair ties that either break or quickly lose all of their elasticity. My favorite thing about Hair Ties for Guys is how durable and long lasting they are. No matter how long I wear them, they still maintain great elasticity and they sure as hell don’t break. The build quality of these things makes me wonder if they could possibly last forever – if I don’t lose them first.
• They look good on the wrist
If you’re anything like me, you like to keep an extra hair tie on your wrist just in case. One of the cool things about Hair Ties for Guys is they look really good on the wrist. The flat construction is low profile, and kind of looks like a bracelet anyways.
• They don’t pull hair
Unlike most crappy store bought hair ties that rip and damage hair upon removal, Hair Ties for Guys doesn’t present that problem. I don’t know if it’s their soft material or the flat construction, but these things come out of the hair easily and painlessly.
• Cool Designs
While I personally prefer solid colors (black specifically), Hair Ties for Guys is available in a wide range of styles, colors, and masculine patterns. You can clearly tell that these things are designed to be a man’s long hair accessory. If black isn’t your thing, check out some of their other available options:
- American flag
- Wood pattern
- Plaid & flannel
- Tie dye
- Skull and crossbones
- Fishing lures
- 80’s style
- Camo
- Ammunition
- Guitars
- Women
- And many more..
• The Longhairs give back
One of the coolest things about Hair Ties For Guys is their charitable outreach program called Longhairs Do Care. Through this program they donate $1 from every purchase to an organization that supports children who suffer from medically related hair loss. Pretty cool.
How do Hair Ties For Guys Compare to Other Hair Ties on the Market?
A hair tie is a hair tie, right? Well, yes, but not all hair ties are created equal – that’s for sure. Hair Ties For Guys are my top pick hair tie for men due to a variety of reasons, as outlined above, but you may be wondering how they compare to other hair ties on the market.
I’ll start with build quality. Hair Ties For Guys stands out in a never-ending sea of hair ties thanks to their quality and craftsmanship. Everything about the look and feel of these hair ties says “premium quality.” From the stitching to the materials used, Hair Ties For Guys is simply different than your average hair tie, which turns out to be a very good thing.
In regards to price, expect to pay a premium for Hair Ties For Guys. Available in packs of 4, these hair ties cost significantly more than your average grocery store bought hair tie. In fact these might be amongst the most expensive hair ties available on the market when you consider you’ll be paying roughly 3 dollars per tie. If price is an issue for you there are much cheaper options out there, albeit of lesser quality for sure.
Lastly, I’ll touch on longevity. The truth is no hair tie is going to last forever. All hair ties will eventually break or stretch out enough that they are rendered ineffective. That being said, Hair Ties For Guys have exhibited excellent durability in my experience. After months of daily use, they still maintain plenty of elasticity and show no signs of ripping, tearing, or breaking. Compared to most other hair ties on the market, Hair Ties For Guys gets an A grade when it comes to durability. This is definitely one of those situations where you get what you pay for.
Terra Ties – Biodegradable Hair Ties for Men
If you’re looking for a simple hair tie that works well and doesn’t cost a whole lot, I encourage you to check out these biodegradable and organic Terra Ties for men. At first glance these hair ties don’t look much different than your typical store bought hair ties, but after putting these ties through their paces for a few weeks, I can tell you that these ties are far superior and much more durable. Made from organic cotton and natural rubber, Terra Ties are an eco-friendly option for men who want a durable, soft, and stretchy hair tie that holds securely and is easy on the wallet.
What I like about Terra Ties:
• Great hold
Let’s face it, the most important thing about a hair tie is how well it holds the hair. Terra Ties are soft and stretchy and hold the hair securely without feeling too tight or uncomfortable. While some hair ties have a tendency to pull and break the hair, I find that Terra Ties are gentle on the hair while still offering a secure hold that stays in place all day.
• Durable and inexpensive
Two of the things I really like about Terra Ties is how inexpensive and durable they are. Offered in a pack of 27 hair ties, Terra Ties offer above average durability and last for weeks without breaking or stretching out. If you’re anything like me, you’re far more likely to lose one of these hair ties before it breaks or needs to be replaced.
eBoot – Large Stretch Hair Ties
I’ll admit it, when I first opened the package of eBoot hair ties I wasn’t expecting much. Based on appearances alone, these hair ties were unlike any hair tie I’d ever seen before. For starters, they are really thick and they don’t have an elastic “core” to them. That’s because the material they are made out of is some type of weird spandex material that has tons of stretch and elasticity. With my expectations pretty low, I gave these odd hair ties a fair try before completely writing them off. As you can probably guess, I turned out to be way wrong. Not only do these eBoot hair ties not suck ass, they are actually pretty awesome.
What I like about eBoot hair ties:
• They have tons of stretch
Did you ever use a hair tie that is really limited on it’s stretching abilities? Like the ones that barely have the ability to double in size. They completely suck, right? Not only are you limited on how tight you can make them, but those are the kind of hair ties that always quickly lose their elasticity. One of the things that I really like about these eBoot hair ties is they stretch for days. Like I could easily wrap one of these things around a basketball if I wanted.
• They don’t break
Another common annoyance with cheap hair ties is their propensity for breaking prematurely. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that nothing lasts forever, but come on. I’ve used hair ties that have snapped during the first use. Thankfully that’s not a problem with eboot hair ties. These things are tough, strong, and durable. I think their biggest advantage is that they have no seams, and no stitching. It’s legitimately a 1 piece hair tie. There’s no weak spots.
Gimme – No Break Hair Ties
If you are completely fed up with hair ties that break, you should be saying, gimme some of those Gimme No Break Hair Ties. These thick hair ties are similar in construction to the seamless eBoot hair ties, but these have a more premium look and feel to them. They are constructed with a very soft, knit microfiber material, and are about as durable as any hair tie you’re going to find (hence “No Break”). Available in a wide range of colors and great for guys with all hair types, Gimme hair ties are definitely worth a try if you’re looking for the best hair tie for men.
What I like about Gimme No Break Hair Ties:
• They are strong as hell
I was initially wondering if they are called “No Break” because they don’t break hair, or because they don’t break in half. I still don’t know the answer because they don’t do either of those things. What I do know is that these things are built to last. They have a thick, durable construction, and are weight tested to hold over 70 pounds. They are also completely seamless which helps eliminate any potential weak spots.
• They don’t get stretched out
The only thing worse than a hair tie that easily breaks, is a hair tie that quickly loses it’s elasticity. One of the things that I really like about Gimme hair ties is how long they stay stretchy. Unlike traditional hair ties, Gimme ties don’t have an elastic “core” to them. Instead the material they are constructed with seems to have spandex woven throughout it. This allows them to maintain their elasticity for months with daily use.
• Color options
If black isn’t your thing, no problem. Gimme hair ties are available in a wide range of colors to suit your style, including: blue, brown, grey, and red.
Scunci – Everyday & Active
If an incredibly strong holding hair tie is what you’re looking for, I highly recommend you check out these Everyday & Active hair ties from Scunci. Ignoring the fact that there is a woman on the packaging, these things provide a strong, all-day hold suitable for any man. Unlike most other hair ties on the market, these Scunci ties are constructed entirely of a smooth rubbery material (Scunci calls it gel) that has a ton of stretch, durability, and grip. Pair their high quality and performance with the fact that they are very inexpensive, and these are definitely an awesome addition to this list of best hair ties for men.
What I like about Scunci Everyday & Active:
• Long lasting hold
As I already mentioned, these things provide a ton of hold. They are perfect for men with active lifestyles who demand nothing but the strongest hold from their hair ties. This includes runners, gym rats, and athletes. The rubber texture is extra grippy and completely prevents chunks or strands of hair from falling out of your man bun of ponytail.
• Durable and long lasting
While no hair tie is going to last forever, these things have some serious longevity to them. I’ve clocked several months worth of daily use with one of these hair ties before it finally snapped. Their strength lies in the strong rubber material they are constructed with and the fact that they are completely seamless.
• Waterproof/Non-absorbent
Unlike most other hair ties that are constructed using fabric materials, these Scunci hair ties don’t hold onto water, hair products, or oil – making them a much more clean and sanitary option when it comes to hair ties.
Kitsch – Spiral Hair Ties
While these might look like one of those old school wrist keychains you wore as a kid, they are actually a pretty kick ass hair tie. Constructed of a durable thermoplastic polyurethane, Kitsch Spiral Hair Ties check all the boxes when it comes to the ideal hair tie for men. Not only are they strong and durable, but they provide plenty of hold for all hair types, they don’t break, and even when they do stretch out, you can shrink them back down to size. These things are definitely worth checking out because they are seriously pretty cool.
What I like about Kitsch Spiral Hair Ties:
• You can shrink them
Like most hair ties, the Kitsch Spiral Hair Tie gets stretched out over time. That’s just the way it is. The special thing about these hair ties is that you can actually shrink them back down to their original size. All you have to do is drop the stretched out hair tie in a cup of hot water, or blast it with a blow dryer for a few seconds and watch it shrink back to it’s original shape. It really does work, and it’s actually pretty cool to watch.
• They hold really well
While these aren’t quite as grippy as the rubber Scunci hair ties, they still offer a really strong, secure hold for all hair types. I don’t know if it’s the unique coil design or the material they’re made of, but one of these Kitsch hair ties is more than enough to keep your man bun securely in place all day.
• Tons of color options
While I’m personally partial to black, Kitsch Spiral Hair Ties are available in a bunch of colors to match your style, including: blue, white, clear, brown, smoke, and blonde. Pink too if you’re into that sort of thing.
Goody – SlideProof Hair Ties
If you’re tired of hair ties that slowly slip out of your hair and leave your man bun in shambles – then you should consider these SlideProof hair ties from Goody. Featuring a unique hybrid-like construction, these hair ties are a cross between silicone and traditional fabric hair ties. The grippy silicone protrusions that cover both sides of this hair tie act like anchors that help keep hair in place, while preventing the tie from slipping and sliding.
What I like about Goody SlideProof hair ties:
• They are tough
While I have tried some Goody hair ties that were of questionable quality, they seem to have hit the nail on the head with these SlideProof hair ties. I find that they offer decent stretch, they are tough, durable, and best of all they actually last.
• They grip really well
One of the things I like about these SlideProof hair ties is how well they grip the hair, but are still really simple to remove. Pure silicone hair ties have a tendency to pull, snag, and damage hair upon removal, but the hybrid construction of these Goody hair ties allows for plenty of grip, while still being really easy and painless to remove.
• They are inexpensive
You don’t always have to spend a lot of money to get a high quality hair product. That’s exactly the case with these Goody SlideProof hair ties. They come in packages of 10, they do exactly what they are supposed to do, and they are really inexpensive. You can’t go wrong.
Burlybands Hair Ties
The name of these hair ties is very fitting for a list of best hair ties for men (burly), but that’s not the only reason why I included them on this list. Aside from the masculine name, Burlybands are friggin rock solid when it comes to quality and toughness. These strong as hell hair ties are thick, incredibly durable, and completely seamless. That means they don’t break and they don’t stretch out prematurely. In fact, just one of these rugged hair ties can easily last for months before needing to be replaced – assuming you don’t lose it first.
What I like about Burlybands hair ties:
• Tough enough for a man
While these hair ties aren’t specifically made for men, they sure as hell seem like they are. They feature a thick, tough, durable construction that feels very high quality in the hand. Not only are they well suited for normal daily wear, but they are tough enough to handle the gym, sports, martial arts, boxing, rock climbing, or whatever physical activity that you’re into.
• One piece construction
Part of the reason why these things are so strong is that they feature a solid one piece construction. They have no seam and they have no elastic “core” like traditional hair ties. Instead they are constructed of a soft, durable, stretchy material (spandex?) that holds up really well to daily use, and doesn’t stretch out prematurely.
• They don’t snag or rip out hair
Thanks to the soft material and thick construction of Burlybands, these things are very simple and painless to remove from the hair. They don’t get snagged or tangled, and most importantly they don’t damage or rip out healthy hairs.
Slip – Silk Scrunchies
If you’re looking for the best hair ties for men and price is not an issue, you gotta check out these silk scrunchie hair ties from Slip. Unlike traditional cotton scrunchies or hair ties, Slip scrunchies are constructed of 100% Mulberry silk which is considered the highest quality of silk available. Not only does this give these scrunchies a super premium look and feel, but they are also very soft and gentle on the hair. They are specifically designed to reduce hair tugging, pulling, tangling, breakage, and split ends while still providing plenty of hold and grip.
What I like about Slip Silk Scrunchies:
• Slim and sleek
Traditional scrunchies tend to be big, bulky, and in my opinion – quite feminine. The thing I really like about these Slip scrunchies is that they are designed to be slim and low profile (Slip calls them skinnies). So not only do they look good in the hair, but they actually look pretty good on the wrist as well.
• Great hold
One of the things that concerned me about a silk hair tie is that it wouldn’t provide much grip for the hair and easily slip out. Fortunately these things don’t live up to their name when it comes to hold. Somehow the very soft and smooth exterior keeps man buns gripped firmly and securely for an impressive all day hold.
• Tough and strong
Considering the steep price tag of these things, I would have been damn disappointed if they broke or quickly lost their elasticity. Thankfully that’s not the case. Although the price is quite high for a hair tie, I will say you get what you pay for in regards to quality, craftsmanship, and materials. The construction and build quality of these things leads me to believe you can expect one of these hair scrunchies to last many months with daily use.
Kooshoo – Organic Hair Ties
If you’re an environmentally conscious guy with long hair, these Kooshoo Organic Hair Ties are for you. They are constructed using organic cotton that is grown, woven, dyed, cut, and sewn in a certified fair trade facility located in the USA. The brand Kooshoo, which means “feeling good” in Norfolk, is founded by husband and wife yoga teachers. Their goal is to create products and accessories that are derived from safe, organic, and natural materials.
What I like about Kooshoo Organic Hair Ties:
• Built tough
Don’t let the fact that these hair ties are made from natural and organic materials fool you. The build quality of these hair ties is impressive. Not only are they tough, strong, and durable – but they also keep their shape and elasticity very well. Based on my experience and user reviews, you can fully expect one of these hair ties to last several months with daily use.
• They grip really well
Whether you wear your hair in a man bun, top-knot, or ponytail, Kooshoo hair ties can manage it. They provide plenty of grip and hold that prevents them from slipping or falling out. Just be gentle when removing. These things can pull out a few strands of hair if you’re not careful.
• They look good on the wrist
One of the things that I really like about Kooshoo Organic Hair Ties is the way they look. I’m the type of guy that likes to keep an extra hair tie on me just in case, but I find that not all hair ties look very masculine on the wrist. Kooshoo Hair Ties on the other hand don’t really look like hair ties at all. They have a flat, low profile construction that looks good and makes wearing one around the wrist both fashionable and functional.

Nice. Thanks for commenting, Alexander.
Great review! Exactly what I needed now that I’ve been growing my hair out thru the pandemic.
Thanks for commenting, David!
I’ve been using the hair ties for guys for a while now, I do like them, but beware! They will stretch out and lose their shape, so if you wear them on your wrist you will find they get floppy and weird after while.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Maco.
Thanks for the recommendations. My hair is often in my face while I work and I’m looking for a hair tie to keep it out of my face and to help with styling it. I also kind of like the look of a man bun so I want to try that hair style out as well.
I’m having a hard time managing my long hair while working out in the gym and while sleeping. It’s usually in my face which is annoying so I figured it was time to get some hair ties that can help me manage it. This list is very helpful and gives me plenty of hair ties to consider to help me manage my long hair.
