Is that snow in your beard or beard dandruff?

If you’re one of the many bearded men that have experienced beard dandruff, you know firsthand how annoying it can be.

Not only is it incredibly unsightly, but it’s also very persistent and super hard to get rid of.

I can’t tell you how many times I thought I found a solution to my own beard dandruff problem only to have it rear its ugly head once again. Frustrating.

The good news is that beard dandruff is pretty common and there is an ever-growing list of products specifically designed to combat this annoying condition. Beard wash is one of those products.

Similar to hair (head) shampoo, beard wash is designed to cleanse the beard of dirt, sweat, excess oil, and grime. Some beard washes are also formulated specifically to fight the cause of annoying beard dandruff and dry skin which is exactly what this article is all about.

But before we get into the list of best beard washes for dry skin and dandruff, let’s briefly discuss what causes beard dandruff in the first place.

In a rush? Skip down to the list of best beard washes for dry skin and dandruff

What is Beard Dandruff? What Causes it?

When most people hear the word dandruff, they automatically assume you’re talking about dry, flaky skin on the scalp. But the unfortunate reality is that dandruff can and does crop up in beard hair as well.

One of the strange things about beard dandruff is that it can start shortly after growing a beard even if you have no prior skin problems. Kind of like the famous quote: “If you build it, they will come.” But in this case I’m talking about disgusting beard dandruff, not baseball playing ghosts.

So what exactly is beard dandruff and what causes it?

Man with a beard

As you probably already know, beard dandruff is nothing more than flakes of dry skin that have detached from your face and are now residing in your beard and making your life a veritable hell. Okay come on now, it’s not that bad!

Beard dandruff is caused by an accumulation of dead skin under the beard and there is a few reasons why this may be happening.

Reason #1 – You’re not washing your beard enough/properly

Believe it or not, one of the most common causes of beard dandruff is simply poor grooming and hygiene habits. If you notice flakes in your beard but don’t have any red or irritated skin underneath, you likely just have dry skin that can be remedied by using a good beard wash and washing your beard properly.

Reason #2 – Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is actually a superficial fungal disease of the skin that causes flaking, itch, and irritated skin. While most people associate seborrheic dermatitis as a scalp condition, it can develop on any part of the skin that contains oil glands – this of course includes the face. Seborrheic dermatitis is not quite as easy to treat as dry skin alone but it can be managed fairly easily with daily use of a good beard wash that is designed to combat the problem.

How to Get Rid of Beard Dandruff

While beard dandruff is undoubtedly annoying and unsightly, it’s thankfully not all that difficult to eliminate and prevent in most cases. Proper daily beard care goes a long way in preventing beard dandruff from popping up in your beard. Daily brushing, beard oil, and regular use of a high quality beard wash that is specifically formulated to eliminate beard dandruff is a great place to start.

Below is a list of some of the absolute best beard washes available that are designed to eliminate beard dandruff, itch, and flakes. Enjoy.

The List:

Other Ways to Prevent Beard Dandruff

Close up picture of a bearded man

Washing your beard is an absolute must when it comes to eliminating beard dandruff but it’s not the only step you can take to help combat the problem. If you’re suffering from annoying beard dandruff here’s 2 simple steps you can incorporate into your daily routine that will help resolve the issue and help your beard look its absolute best.

1. Moisturize your beard and skin

This one is a no brainer. If you’re not moisturizing your beard and skin on a daily basis you are doing your beard a major disservice.

When your beard is short it relies on your skin’s natural oils (sebum) to stay moisturized and nourished. But once your beard gets past the short phase (over an inch or so) the skin begins to struggle producing enough oil to keep both your beard and skin moisturized. That’s where beard oil comes in.

Beard oil is designed to mimic the skin’s natural oils and does an awesome job at smoothing and softening beard hair and best of all it helps eliminate unsightly beard dandruff and beard itch. Not sure which beard oil to choose? Check out my list of best beard oils for beard dandruff.

2. Brush your beard

While you may have thought that brushes were just for the hair on your head, they are actually very beneficial for the health and appearance of your beard too.

Brushing your beard on a daily basis not only keeps your beard looking great and tangle free, but more importantly it helps slough away the dead skin cells that can accumulate under your beard which contribute to skin irritation and dandruff.

While there are many different kinds of beard brushes and combs on the market, I personally recommend using a boar bristle brush due to its ability to evenly distribute the skin’s natural oils (or beard oil) over the entire length of the beard hair shaft. Here’s the boar bristle brush I personally use every day. I highly recommend it.
