How to Combat and Prevent Dry Hands
Using a good hand lotion or cream is great for alleviating dry, cracked skin, but there are plenty of steps you can take to help prevent dry hands from occurring in the first place.
Below are a few basic tips and tricks you can use to help prevent your hands from becoming dry, cracked, and irritated while on the job.
1. Wear gloves
If you’re a construction worker or manual laborer, protecting your hands at work is the single most important step you can take to keep your hands soft, smooth, and hydrated. Investing in a good pair of work gloves will not only help protect your hands from injury, but they will also help keep them protected from chemicals and materials that can strip away the skin’s natural oils.
2. Treat your hands overnight
Slathering your hands in a good petroleum based moisturizer, such as Aquaphor, before bed is a great way to keep your hands moisturized and hydrated. You can even cover your hands in a pair of socks or gloves while you sleep to help lock in the moisture. It might sound kind of ridiculous to wear socks or gloves on your hands while you sleep, but trapping the petroleum based moisturizer will help it absorb deeper into the skin.
3. Moisturize after washing your hands
Washing your hands is great for removing germs and bacteria, but the problem is that it also strips away the skin’s natural oils. That’s why it’s important to always apply a little bit of lotion after washing your hands. This will help keep your hands moisturized throughout the day, greatly reducing the chances of them becoming dry, cracked, and irritated while working.

I was suffering from dry hands. Now that I got yr list I am heading to shop though not sure if I find any here in Cambodia. Many thanks for the info anyway.
Good luck with the search. Thanks for commenting.
I spent the last 20 years in construction and I never even realized how bad my hands were until my young niece commented on my hands and said they felt like alligator skin. I’ve become so used to how they are that I thought it was completely normal. I’m now on a mission to soften my hands the best i can. While I doubt any of these topical hand lotions/creams will get my hands feeling as soft as a baby’s bottom, I will take any improvement at this point. Thanks for the article and also the additional tips.
No problem. Thanks for reading, Ray.
When my hands get bad in the dry winter months a hate touching anything. Clothes and blankets catch on the dry, cracked skin of my hands and feels very uncomfortable. I try basic hand lotion but it usually doesn’t help all that much. I’m looking for something that can actually heal my hands and actually help remove the dry skin.
