How to Choose the Best Personal Lube for You
Whatever your reason for using a personal lube, it’s important to keep in mind that not all lubes are created equal. While any high quality lube is perfectly capable of making your desired hole of entry slippery smooth, the fact remains that some lubes perform better than others in certain situations.
Here’s a quick guide that will help you choose the right kind of lube for you and your situation:
• For people with sensitive skin: Stick with clear, water based or silicone based lubes only. Try to avoid lubes that contain flavors, fragrances, and oils, as these ingredients are known to cause irritation in users with sensitive skin.
• For condom use: Stick with water based and silicone based lubes. Oil based lubes have been known to degrade latex condoms which can result in STI’s or unwanted pregnancy. No bueno.
• For anal sex: I recommend sticking with a water based or silicone based lube for anal sex. If I had to give an edge to one or the other, I’d say go with a silicone based lube. It tends to be more slippery and it usually lasts longer.
• For giving/getting a handy: Pretty much any type of lube will do, but I recommend going with a silicone based lube since it’s very long lasting, and it’s generally considered the most slippery.
• For vaginal dryness: Nobody likes a dry vag! While any type of lube is capable of getting the job done (for better or worse), I recommend using a silicone based lube because they typically last the longest, and are known to be the most slippery.
• For sex toy use: Stick with a water based lube for this one. Silicone based lubes will dissolve silicone toys, and oil based lubes will dissolve latex toys.
• For baby making: Some studies have shown that lube can actually have an impact on sperm mobility once it’s in the vagina. Because of this, companies began manufacturing fertility lubes that help support sperm quality and mobility.
• For water play: Whether you’re getting busy in the shower, pool, or hot tub, silicone based lube is your best bet. Water based lubes get washed away instantly in water and oil based lubes will degrade latex condoms.
