Scent is a very subjective thing.
A fragrance that works well for me might not necessarily work well for you — and vice versa. That’s because our senses perceive and interpret odor in different ways.
Rarely will two people describe a fragrance in the exact same way. There are subtleties and nuances when it comes to matters involving the olfactory senses and they vary from person to person.
If you happen to be one of those men that prefer to avoid the endless variety of fragrances found in male grooming products, I don’t blame you.
In a hurry? Skip ahead to the list of best unscented beard oils for sensitive skin
When describing the smell of most beard and skincare products, the word subtle doesn’t exactly come to mind. Especially when talking about beard oil.
Since facial hair sits directly below the nose, using the wrong smelling beard oil can feel very much like cruel and unusual punishment as you go about your day.
If you’ve ever found yourself in a public bathroom washing an especially unbearable smelling beard oil from your face because you couldn’t take it any longer — you know exactly what I’m talking about.
But since our beards still need the moisturizing and hydrating benefits offered by beard oil, skipping it altogether is simply not an option.
Best Beard Oil for Sensitive Skin
While there are some men that simply don’t like scented beard oil, there are other bearded gentlemen that simply can’t use scented beard oil. That’s because essential oils and fragrances can be irritating to the skin.

Here’s what’s great about The Bearded Grenade RAW beard oil:
• Beard and skin beneficial ingredients
Beard oil isn’t just intended for the beard, it’s also meant to nourish and moisturize the skin underneath the beard as well. That’s why RAW beard oil from The Bearded Grenade is formulated with a balance of carrier oils that target both the beard and skin. Here’s a closer look at the ingredients inside RAW beard oil:
- Meadowfoam seed oil – Derived from the seeds of the meadowfoam flower that is found in the USA, this lightweight oil is full of long chain fatty acids that lock in moisture and hydration. It’s excellent at softening coarse beard hair while helping to eliminate beard breakage and split ends. It’s also lightweight, non-greasy, and doesn’t clog pores.
- Argan oil – Derived from the kernels of the argan tree located in Morocco, this lightweight, non-greasy oil is full of vitamins and nutrients that soften the beard, increase strength, and it even helps protect the beard from damage. It also helps eliminate beard breakage and split ends.

- Rosehip oil – Known as the “oil of youth”, rosehip oil is full of benefits for the skin underneath the beard. This not only helps eliminate beard itch and beard dandruff, but it also helps promote healthy beard growth.
- Pomegranate seed oil – An incredibly unique carrier oil that contains punicic acid which has been shown to increase blood flow to the skin, helping to increase beard thickness and fullness over time.
- Watermelon seed oil – Derived from South Africa, watermelon seed oil is an excellent all-around carrier oil for the beard and skin. It’s full of vitamins and nutrients that smooth and soften, while helping to promote healthy beard growth. It’s also lightweight, non-greasy, and non-comedogenic.
- Castor oil – A thicker carrier oil that helps with beard shaping and taming flyaway beard hairs. Castor oil has also been to increase beard growth by stimulating the hair follicle. It also helps soften and smooth the beard by locking in moisture and hydration. It’s non-greasy and non-comedogenic.
- Passionfruit seed oil – Full of vitamin and nutrients and containing over 72% linoleic acid, passionfruit seed oil is one of the best carrier oils in the world for moisturizing the skin underneath the beard. It’s great for preventing beard itch and beard dandruff.
- Vitamin E – Helps strengthen and protect the beard and is excellent for preventing beard itch. It’s also a great natural preservative, which helps increase the lifespan of carrier oils that are blended with it.
• Handmade in small batches
One of the things I really like about The Bearded Grenade is that it’s a small, USA based company that prioritizes quality and freshness. All of their beard oils are handmade in small batches. This not only ensures quality and consistency, but it also means a fresher product. While most large companies order their ingredients in mass quantities to save on costs, The Bearded Grenade orders their ingredients in small quantities, ensuring nothing but the freshest ingredients go into every bottle of their beard oil.
• Excellent for guys with sensitive skin
Bearded men can have sensitive skin too. That’s why The Bearded Grenade formulates their RAW unscented beard oil using skin safe, non-irritating carrier oils that are perfect for men with sensitive skin. In fact their RAW beard oil has a bunch of positive reviews from men with sensitive skin. If you commonly experience itchiness or irritation from beard oil, I highly recommend you give The Bearded Grenade RAW beard oil a try.
• Non-greasy and won’t clog pores
No guy wants to use a beard oil that leaves their beard feeling greasy or weighed down. One of the things I really like about The Bearded Grenade RAW beard oil is that it’s formulated with carrier oils that are non-greasy, fast absorbing, and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). This makes it an excellent choice for all skin types, including guys who have sensitive skin or are prone to acne. In fact, The Bearded Grenade has a full write up discussing the ingredients they use and why they use them. If you’re interested you can check it out here.
• Cool packaging
While this isn’t really related to the beard oil itself, it’s worth noting that The Bearded Grenade offers some cool ass product packaging. Every bottle of their beard oil comes in a large 2oz aluminum bottle with an easy to use, mess free pump dispenser. They also include a mini drawstring bag which is great for transporting the beard oil while traveling. It also makes it very gift worthy.

As with all unscented beard oils, you can expect a natural odor from the oils themselves which can vary quite a bit depending on the oils used. Once it’s applied to the beard you won’t even notice it’s there.

What Does Unscented or Fragrance Free Beard Oil Mean?
Okay, so this question might seem kind of obvious but I get tons of questions from readers asking me if unscented or fragrance free beard oil has zero smell to it.
But the truth is everything in life has a natural scent and oils are no different. Unscented or fragrance free beard oil simply means that it has no added ingredients that are scented such as essential oils or fragrance oils.
But that doesn’t mean that the beard oil will be completely void of any smell. There will be a slight, subtle, natural odor to all unscented beard oil but it is usually very faint and will dissipate shortly after applying to the beard.
Thanks for reading my list of best unscented beard oils for sensitive skin. If you found this article helpful I recommend checking out my list of best beard oils for dry skin and dandruff. As always, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to drop me a line in the comment section down below.
Perfect, thanks for this list. I’m not a big fan of putting scents in my beard. I dont even wear cologne. Definitely going to give one of these unscrted beard oils a try.
I always have an unscented beard oil in my arsenal for those days when I’m not really in a scented mood. Thanks for commenting!
You missed an angle for this story; men are probably desperate for unscented options for beard oil because of the covid mask requirements. I found myself skipping out on my beard oil because I have to work in a mask all day now and the scent of the oil is unbearable inside the mask. I searched for unscented beard oil for this reason and found this article. Thanks!
Thanks for the input, you’re absolutely right. When I originally wrote this article the whole mask thing wasn’t an issue. I can absolutely see how some beard oil scents would make wearing a mask pretty unbearable. Thanks for commenting, Tim.
I’m with you on this one. I have a cabinet full of beard oils that i rotate through, but the problem is they are all scented. With the requirements to wear a mask I find that the scent of the oils can quickly become to much to handle throughout the day inside the mask. I came across this article looking for a good unscented beard oil to add to my collection.
Perfect! Thanks for this. As someone else mentioned wearing scented beard oil under these masks can be quite brutal as the day goes on. I still want to keep my beard hydrated and moisturized but I want a beard oil that is scentless or unscented. I’m so glad I found this page. Most of these options I haven’t even heard of except maybe a few. I’m excited to give your number one pick a try.
I’m glad this article was helpful to you. Thanks for commenting, Randy.
Yeah i agree. Scented beard oil under these masks is just brutal. I’m not big on scented beard oil to begin with unless it’s a subtle scent but even subtle scents are unbearable for me under the mask. I’ve been trying multiple unscented beard oils but I’m not currently thrilled with the performance of any of them and most of them kind of smell like old cooking oil. No fragrance but they definitely smell “oily” if that makes sense. I completely understand that oil will have a natural smell to it but I’m trying to find a unscented beard oil that has as little smell as possible but still performs really well. I’m interested in trying a few of the recommendations on this list. Thanks for the information
Exactly what I was looking for: unscented beard oil. It seems like everything has a scent to it nowadays and when the product is going in my beard I really don’t want to smell fragrance or essential oils all day. Even some of the “unscented” beard oils i tried have a slight scent to them which is really annoying. I understand all oil has a natural odor but some unscented beard oil just smells way too strong and “nutty” if that makes sense. I would really like an oil that smells as close to nothing as possible.
Yes, some unscented beard oils have more of a natural odor than others. The carrier oils used have a big impact on how much of a natural scent or odor an unscented beard oil will have. Thanks for commenting, Nathaniel.
